WOBURN — During its Oct. 17 meeting, the Woburn Licensing Commission reviewed a communication from the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission (ABCC) outlining violations by Colonial package store and other administrative items, approved meeting minutes and scheduled follow-up with police.
The commission summarized the ABCC finding that the Colonial package store had multiple infractions, including instances where staff failed to request identification and at least one instance involving fake IDs. Per the ABCC action reported at the meeting, the license suspension was set for three days, of which one day is to be served and two days held in abeyance for two years provided there are no further violations of chapter 138; the suspension was scheduled to be served on Monday, Jan. 6, 2025, and the license returned on Jan. 7, 2025.
Chairman Tommy Scheffington Buchanan said the commission is limited in its authority once the ABCC has conducted a hearing but asked Captain Murphy to monitor compliance locally. Captain Murphy was unable to attend the meeting and is expected to provide a more detailed update at the commission’s next meeting.
The commission also confirmed procedural items around mandatory license-renewal packet pickup and deadlines, noted that most licensees had submitted required paperwork, and unanimously approved the meeting minutes. Commissioners briefly referenced local business activity and press reports about a merger and mentioned ongoing legal developments connected to local establishments (Jake and Joe’s/Dog House), which Captain Murphy will discuss at a future meeting.
What’s next: Licensing staff will report back on police follow-up and documentation status; the ABCC suspension timeline is administrative and will be executed per the ABCC schedule.
