Board hears first reading of AI policy, then approves routine personnel, calendar and social-media items

The East Penn School District Board held a policy first reading and approved several routine items during the Aug. 12 meeting.
Dr. Povillaitis introduced a draft policy 815.1 governing the use of generative artificial intelligence in education, noting the document drew from a PSBA template and is intended to provide governance guidance while the technology and legal landscape evolve. "There are no state or federal statutes specifically requiring the adoption of board policy, but schools right now are moving forward with integrating some level of policy," Povillaitis said. Board members expressed support and asked that professional development and family-facing guidance accompany implementation.
Later in the meeting the board approved multiple items by roll call: a personnel addendum and correction to a support-staff transfer (Brian Wukic), recognition of two retirees (Barb Borgioni and James Orbanowitz), a business-operations consent package (items A–E), an educational-conferences item, an amended 2024 schedule moving the reorganization meeting from Dec. 2 to Dec. 3, and authorization of Instagram accounts for Albertus Elementary School and Conteil Elementary School. Each of the recorded roll calls reported eight ayes.
The AI policy and other policy updates tied to Act 33 were presented for first reading; the board expects second readings and further action at upcoming meetings.
