North Allegheny Foundation reports higher giving, $66,000 in grants and expanded scholarships

Joe Byerley, chair of the North Allegheny Foundation Trustees, told the school board on Sept. 25 that the foundation’s 2023–24 work focused on grants, scholarships and community engagement.
"We pursue our mission through three primary activities — grantmaking, scholarships, and connecting with the community," Byerley said. He reported the foundation distributed over $66,000 in grants for programming and student support, provided about $31,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors, and allocated roughly $2,000 in EITC funding for STEM initiatives.
Byerley described specific grants that funded a Jungle Gym Ninja Course at Ingram Elementary, a printer for the Tiger Den at NASH, a sensory path at McKnight Elementary and robotics programming, and said the foundation provided approximately $2,000 in "angel funds" to assist students with immediate needs.
Board members asked for detail on recent fundraising events. "It is a $105,000 (gross) event and I think the net will be 65 to 70" was the presenter’s estimate when asked about the golf outing, and trustees welcomed the reported increase in giving.
Dr. Hyland and trustees encouraged applicants to apply for foundation grants; Byerley said grant awards should be ready for board approval in late October and distribution in November.
Why it matters: Foundation grants and scholarships put private funds to work inside district classrooms and extracurricular programs. The foundation’s reported increase in giving allows the district to expand targeted supports, from classroom materials to student scholarships.
What’s next: The foundation’s trustees said they will finalize grant awards in late October and return to the board for formal approval and disbursement in November.
