Ty Holmes elected Scranton School District board president; Cheswick chosen as vice president

Ty Holmes was elected president of the Scranton School District Board of Directors in a roll-call vote at the district's reorganization meeting. The secretary reported a tally of 6 votes for Holmes, 2 for Director Merkel, and 1 abstention; Holmes was then installed as board president and addressed the board.

The vote followed an open nomination period. The secretary read Board policy No. 5 aloud, explaining that with nine members present a candidate needs a majority of votes cast (five) to win and that a runoff would be held if no candidate received a clear majority on the first ballot. After nominations closed and the board voted by roll call, the secretary announced the result and turned the meeting over to President Holmes.

Holmes thanked district staff and administrators in brief remarks, saying the board represents taxpayers and must prioritize student outcomes while working with the superintendent. "This board does not belong to us. This is the people's board," Holmes said. He added that the district should continue working together to solve problems and pursue improvements.

Separately, the board elected a vice president. After nominations, the secretary reported 6 votes for Director Cheswick and 3 for Director Marco; Director Cheswick was declared vice president. The board then completed swearing-in formalities and proceeded with the rest of the reorganization agenda.

The meeting included procedural explanation of the election process and short remarks from several board members about governance priorities. No formal policy changes were adopted during the elections; the board later voted to table a separate agenda item (the board's book of rules) for further review.
