Board adopts policies on AI, Chromebooks and vehicles; approves personnel actions

The board advanced several governance items affecting instruction, technology and staff procedures.

Policy changes: The board approved a second‑read revision of policies including 222 (Tobacco and Vaping Products) and 227 (Controlled Substances/Paraphernalia). It also approved a new policy, 815.1, addressing the use of generative artificial intelligence in education and a new 817 policy formalizing the Chromebook 1:1 initiative. Administration said AI guidance will be covered in staff and principal meetings and that parents will be notified as required; Chromebook metrics (including devices not returned) will be collected and a recommendation for insurance vs. in‑house repair will be provided.

Vehicle policy: The board approved new policy 710.1 governing use of district vehicles by staff and students. Discussion covered authorization (superintendent or designee), current practice allowing staff to take vehicles home, GPS tracking on vehicles and district payment for fuel. Administration confirmed GPS devices are on district vehicles and that mileage logs will be used to track authorized use; the policy language can be amended to clarify areas such as student use if required.

Personnel actions: The board approved the personnel report (hires contingent on background checks), and approved promotions of assistant principals (Armstrong and Adams) to elementary principal status effective immediately. Votes on personnel items passed with recorded tallies noted in the minutes.

The board asked administration to pin finalized policies on the district website for the full school year so parents and staff can consult them and requested a staff meeting to review new AI and Chromebook policies with principals and senior staff.
