Tennessee Department of Safety cases reset; temporary suspensions agreed for officers with pending criminal matters

The informal POST committee reset multiple Department of Safety decertification matters to allow criminal investigations to proceed and accepted temporary suspension agreements in at least two cases.
Captain Jacob Stilo, Office of Professional Accountability for the Tennessee Highway Patrol, described behavioral concerns and, in one instance, a vehicle‑theft arrest for Trooper Jason Hill. Stilo said Hill had sent a series of emails to colleagues that agency leadership found harassing and that the April 2024 arrest for allegedly taking another person’s vehicle prompted termination and a decertification request.
Hill told the committee he has pending civil and criminal litigation and said he would sign an agreed suspension order and not seek other law‑enforcement employment while the matters proceed. Commissioners voted to reset Hill’s matter for one month to allow legal counsel to prepare an agreed suspension.
The department also requested postponement for a separate officer, Brandon Weigand; the department reported coordinating with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the district attorney’s office to avoid prejudicing pending criminal actions. Weigand agreed to enter an agreed temporary suspension; the panel approved the postponement and accepted the suspension agreement.
Commissioners emphasized that agreed suspensions preserve discovery and protect the integrity of any criminal process while removing officers from active status pending resolution.
