At its Nov. 15 meeting, the Post Commission approved a string of routine personnel actions, accepted the surrender of a POST certification and moved to empower the informal subcommittee to recommend sending older matters to an administrative law judge (ALJ) to address a backlog.
Motions carried to approve the Oct. 18 meeting report and to refer several disciplinary matters for formal hearing. Post staff reported outcomes from an informal subcommittee: the Knoxville Police Department matter involving Sean Riley Sajak was sent to a full formal hearing, while the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department matter involving Devon Ray Wheeler saw a reversed default decertification and a flag on the officer’s Acadis record. Several default decertifications were recorded for respondents who did not appear, including matters tied to Shelby County and the Tennessee Department of Safety.
The commission approved academy‑waiver requests and late paperwork in multiple cases. Athens Police Department presented a waiver for Cameron Myers (hired Oct. 7, 2024) so he may attend the Blount County Regional Training Academy after previously withdrawing from a Knox County academy; staff described an on‑the‑job conditioning plan. Brownsville Police Department’s request for a six‑month waiver for Parker Lee Bond (hired Aug. 26, 2024) to attend the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy in March 2025 was approved. The commission approved retroactive paperwork for Thomas Shane Hodges and accepted the surrender of Corey Cortez Payne’s POST certification after investigators found Payne working while suspended. Lake County and Labor County staffing paperwork and corrective steps were reviewed and accepted.
Post investigator Kevin Crede updated the board that Polk County has completed required training uploads to Acadis and is now compliant. Staff reported roughly 38 pending forms (about 19 set for hearings) and said the docket has dropped from the 40s into the 30s in recent months. To manage older cases more efficiently, a motion passed granting the informal subcommittee the authority to recommend that cases three years or older be sent to an ALJ for initial orders; the commission retained the final authority to approve, modify or overturn ALJ findings and any final order remains appealable to chancery court.
A commissioner also reported a special committee examining bail bond industry practices and possible legislative changes. The meeting concluded with congratulatory remarks for Assistant Director Rafael Bello, who received an Eagle of Excellence Award from the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Officers Association.
