Board approves resolution to call Aug. 27 election for Kanawha annexation to Pontotoc Technology Center

The Oklahoma CareerTech board voted to accept a resolution calling an Aug. 27 election to annex the Kanawha Independent School District into Pontotoc Technology Center.

Gina, who presented a map and explained the district process, told the board that Kanawha’s school board and Pontotoc’s board had both already approved resolutions. She said the board’s vote here is the procedural step that will allow an election to be held in August so the annexation can take effect before the start of the school year.

Board members asked how the annexation would affect neighboring districts. Staff replied that reciprocity agreements and student-sharing arrangements are common between districts and that Pontotoc and Gordon Cooper could continue to share students under those agreements. The board then moved, seconded and approved the resolution by roll-call vote.

The board’s action authorizes the election but does not itself effect the annexation; the annexation will be decided by voters in the Kanawha election scheduled for Aug. 27. The board did not discuss additional implementation details such as timeline for any program changes, funding shifts or specific reciprocity terms during the meeting.

The board adjourned after completing the action.
