Commission hears updates on SEDS studies; Towson and UMD work extended to February

Commission staff updated the Economic Development Commission on the status of related studies that feed into the county—s comprehensive economic development strategy (SEDS). Robin told the commission that Towson University asked to extend its contract through the end of February to allow consultants time to scrub projections and incorporate commissioner feedback.
A county staff member said federal and state funders have indicated they are comfortable with an extension, and staff will bring documentation to the county commissioners for formal approval. Robin asked commission members to submit written comments on the Towson draft and said the commission would see another draft rather than just a final report.
Staff also said a document focused on defense and manufacturing is expected shortly after Thanksgiving, and graduate students will assist with an updated economic overview. Commissioners discussed the need to translate technical charts into plain language for public audiences and to use work sessions to refine the local flavor of recommendations.
No formal votes were taken. Commissioners concluded the meeting after moving and seconding a motion to adjourn.
