Polk County staff report moving 360 people into permanent housing over 18 months

County staff reported to the Polk County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 10 that outreach and housing partners have placed 360 people from literal homelessness into permanent housing over the last 18 months.
Unidentified Speaker 2, who gave the update, said placements were made through Section 8, a rapid rehousing program and traditional housing options. "In the last year and a half, our team and our partners have been able to, move 360 individuals from literal homelessness into permanent housing, either Section 8, rapid rehousing program, or traditional housing," the speaker said, adding that "about 40% of those individuals are children."
The update noted that many of the people served were families, survivors of domestic violence and seniors. Unidentified Speaker 1 responded by emphasizing seniors as an emerging challenge: "I know our seniors are becoming our fastest growing homeless challenge because they're limited incomes."
The speaker who presented the update described county population context as "a population of around 50,000," and said the programs have made "a significant amount of progress" while also indicating continued needs and that more work is required to address limited incomes and housing access among seniors.
The meeting concluded after the report and a short safety reminder from a commissioner about roadway driving conditions.
