Polk County commissioners approve reclassifications for four county employees

The Polk County Board of Commissioners approved reclassifications for four county employees at its Dec. 10 meeting, moving three engineering survey technicians in Public Works to the next pay step and promoting one planner in Community Development.
Matt Hawkins, a county staff member who presented both requests, said Desmond Caldwell, Christy Erickson and Kayla Silverman meet the standards to move from Engineering Survey Technician 1 to Engineering Survey Technician 2 and requested the change be made effective Dec. 1. "They each meet the standards required to move on to the next position," Hawkins said. He estimated the change, including PERS contributions, would increase costs by about $25,000 and stated the Public Works budget can absorb that amount.
Hawkins also requested that Hannah Brickner be reclassified from associate planner to senior planner, effective Jan. 1, citing a planner vacancy and additional duties taken on by staff. He estimated a full 12-month fiscal impact of about $78,100 including PERS contributions. "To a senior planner, we've had a planner leave this last summer and haven't filled the position and [she] has taken on those extra duties," Hawkins said.
Board members signaled consent for both personnel actions during the meeting. For the public-works reclassifications, one board member said, "I approve that," and another said, "I'm good with that too," after Hawkins presented the request. For the planner reclassification, a board member responded, "I'm good."
