Superintendent reports clean audit, upcoming program study; UBSE plans Global Celebrations event

During the Dec. 3 Equity Council meeting, Dr. Liggins and Dr. Matthews provided regular reports updating the council on district recognition programs, fiscal condition and upcoming events.
Dr. Liggins said the district has instituted a monthly "equity champion" recognition for staff and announced the district received a clean financial audit for the fifth year in a row with zero findings. "We had a clean financial audit, for the 5th year in a row, found 0 findings, and we are a very sound and fiscal... entity," he told the council.
Liggins also said the board will receive a study on special and magnet programs that examines how those campuses perform compared with peers. He cautioned that immigration- and executive-order-related developments are uncertain and said the district will rely on legal counsel to interpret any federal directive while affirming a commitment to respect and protect students.
Dr. Matthews reported that 94 staff members are enrolled in site-based Spanish classes across 41 sites, with a waiting list for the next semester. He promoted an upcoming Global Celebrations event on Dec. 14 that will combine cultural performances and learning sessions to educate staff and community members about diverse holiday traditions.
The reports were informational and no formal board actions were taken on these items during the meeting.
