Superintendent outlines school-year calendar, construction updates and staffing shortfalls

During the July 22 meeting the superintendent provided the district's start-of-year schedule and construction updates, and flagged continuing hiring challenges for certain classes.

Key calendar items: a new-teacher breakfast and in-service days are scheduled before classes begin; the superintendent said school will start on a Friday (a full day) and outlined mandatory training (ACEs and blood-borne-pathogens, plus suicide-prevention online training). Construction updates: the stadium turf and track were reported nearly complete and the stadium structure largely finished except for the press box and wiring; staff warned of one concrete pour at the Regional Innovation Center's front parking area that may need to be torn out and re-poured because of surface quality concerns. Several project punch-list items remain but staff said contractors are making steady progress.

Staffing: the board and superintendent focused on two priority vacancies: high-school computer science and Spanish. The superintendent said the district has struggled to find a licensed Spanish teacher and is exploring options including recruiting retired teachers for part-time work, offering Chinese as an alternative language course, or using concurrent/virtual options as a stopgap. Board members discussed licensure rules and trade-offs; staff said they would continue recruitment and confirm licensure requirements.

The superintendent invited board members to tour projects and said staff will report progress on construction, hiring and funding at the next board meeting.
