North Scott board hears frustration over welding lab delays; district pushes vendors for parts

District facilities staff told the board the welding and metals lab cannot operate at full capacity because a key electrical/duct component and air filtration hookups remain backordered. Board members said that repeated delivery delays have forced instructors to limit instruction and that some students are missing planned lab time while the district arranges interim workarounds.

A facilities presenter told the board the missing component prevents the district from wiring major tools and linkages that feed milling machines and plasma cutters; staff said limited welding can occur using individual gas cylinders but the full shop is not yet energized. Board members asked for a weekly, written punch‑list update from the construction manager so the district and families can track progress.

The board also received updates on the football stadium (fire‑marshal items and temporary fire watch arrangements for game use) and the regional Innovation Center, where concrete and remaining punch‑list work were described as on schedule for a December completion and an opening early next year. District staff warned that some delays are caused by nationally constrained suppliers and that direct‑wiring work or alternate installation may increase cost but speed availability for students.

Board members repeatedly asked staff to escalate communication from construction managers and contractors to the board so the district does not learn about delays only through instructors and frontline staff. The district said it has started direct payments and other stop‑gap measures in some cases to mitigate instructional loss while final components are delivered and installed.
