Superintendent spotlights staff tenure, facility dog 'Ken' and Southeast Youth Development Center

Superintendent Dr. Russell told the Perkiomen Valley School District board that the district marked the start of the school year by recognizing long‑serving staff and naming new tenure recipients. He read a list of educators slated for tenure this year and said the titles and roles ranged from speech therapists to special‑education teachers and instructional coaches.

Dr. Russell introduced Ken, a facility dog assigned to West, and showed the board a short video describing Ken’s role and rules for interacting with him. "So every time you see this dog, he looks like he's smiling. And this is Ken," Dr. Russell said, emphasizing handlers will manage interactions and students must ask permission before petting the dog.

He also provided an update on the Southeast Youth Development Center, saying five students are currently residing at the center and a sixth is expected shortly. He described ongoing interior construction to increase living and learning spaces and said the program is working toward a planned maximum enrollment of 40 once renovations are complete, which the administration estimates could be around December.

Dr. Russell noted opening‑day activities recognized staff with 25‑, 30‑ and 35‑year service awards and described the district’s continued focus on academic growth, English‑learner proficiency and staff wellness as objectives for the year. He closed by flagging upcoming committee and school events on the district calendar.

The board did not take a separate vote on the superintendent’s informational report; items that required board action were handled later on the consent agenda or in committee follow‑up.
