Perkiomen Valley committee moves tobacco/vaping and controlled-substances policies to first reading

Perkiomen Valley School District policy committee reviewed proposed revisions from the Pennsylvania School Boards Association and directed administration to move several updated policies to first reading.
Doctor Russell told the committee that PSBA's model had eliminated references to vaping, but the district prefers to retain specific vaping language. "It's important to keep that language in the policy and be very explicit about it," Doctor Russell said when discussing policy 02/22 (tobacco and vaping for students). The committee voted to send that policy to first reading.
The committee also reviewed related personnel language in policy 03/23 to ensure consistent definitions (for example, adding "a vaping pen or device" to the staff policy). Miss Weidner will reconcile the definitions across the documents before the first reading. Similar wording updates recommended by PSBA for controlled-substances policies (including policy 351) were accepted and sent to first reading; administrators clarified that medically prescribed nicotine-replacement products (patch, gum, lozenge) are treated as cessation aids, not prohibited items.
What's next: Administration will clean up definitions (Miss Weidner) and present the redlined policies at first reading for further committee and board consideration.
