School committee approves Program of Studies, competency determination, policies and accepts gifts

Policy & Education Subcommittee chair (Ms. Tuffy) brought forward four policies for second reading: Policy JJ (Co‑Curricular & Extracurricular Activities), Policy JJH (Student Travel), the Parent Communications Policy KBA (language updated to reference parents/guardians/families), and Policy KE (Public Concerns). The committee approved the amendments and adopted the policies by unanimous vote.
On gifts, the committee accepted multiple small deposits and checks for athletics, clubs and department support, and recorded the Nelson K. Chen Memorial Fund donation of $6,000 specifically to offset full‑day kindergarten tuition for families in need. Committee members thanked donors and noted the funds will be processed through school finance.
The meeting concluded with updates from the Finance & Operations Subcommittee and student representative reports on regional council work and student‑level concerns about reductions in electives and activity advisers. The committee then moved into executive session to discuss a nonunion personnel services contract.
