Committee forwards stadium turf replacement and fire engine planning to full Council

Public Works Director Navarro told the committee the city obtained a $1.4 million quote to replace stadium turf that the department says has reached its 10–12 year life expectancy and is now beyond warranty. Navarro said the mayor favors adding more natural surfaces in smaller locations and the Florence Street Park design was changed from turf to natural grass.
“If this is approved, would this be ready for next season?” a councilor asked. Navarro said the goal is to have the field ready for the next football season and that the procurement will follow state contract and bid list availability.
Separately, Fire Chief Hickey described a replacement plan for Engine 3: the current unit is 14 years old, the department maintains three frontline pumps and one spare (the spare is 23 years old), and typical build times for apparatus are 36–40 months, meaning delivered equipment can be near the upper end of a vehicle’s useful life. Hickey said the department intends to keep Engine 3 as a spare and retire the older spare when replacements arrive.
The committee approved the referral to the full Council with a favorable recommendation.
