District finance staff presented a new monthly budget‑revision process and an updated projection showing the adopted budget deficit had narrowed to roughly $1.4 million since budget adoption, driven partly by carryovers and updated revenue estimates.
The district announced a new Budget Advisory Committee made up of teachers, classified staff, parents and community members to review reserve policy, deficit mitigation strategies and budget development. "We'll be doing a monthly budget revision and update so that the board is always more up to speed," a finance presenter said.
Trustees pressed for more detail on revenue assumptions (the speaker cited recent tax rolls showing a 4.7% increase in assessed values) and asked staff to provide comparative data on the affordability of under‑enrolling classrooms versus adding sections. Several trustees underlined the district’s need to preserve reserves and to demonstrate fiscal discipline, noting the district’s prior parcel‑tax history.
On a procedural matter related to the Governing Agency's Maximum (GAM) limit, the board approved a corrected resolution to align the written figure with the previously approved GAM limit; the roll call included President Nakatani, Trustee Abdullah, Trustee Yu and Trustee Katzenheim voting "aye."
Trustees moved and approved a motion to accept the budget update; staff said they will post monthly revisions and bring recommended reserve policy language back to the board later in the year.
