Carpinteria board approves statewide college-planning portal MOU and routine organizational business
Summary
Trustees approved a memorandum of understanding to adopt the California College Guidance Initiative (CCGI), accepted several grants and donations, and approved the 2023–24 audit and multiple Measure U capital items during the Dec. 17 meeting.
The Carpinteria Unified School District Governing Board voted Dec. 17 to adopt a memorandum of understanding with the California College Guidance Initiative, the statewide platform the state expects all public high schools to adopt by 2026. The board also completed its annual organizational business and approved a series of routine financial and capital items.
Gerardo Cornejo (identified in the agenda as the CHS principal) presented the CCGI portal and described features that pull a student’s coursework and grades from the district’s Aeries system, map courses to UC/CSU a–g categories, track FAFSA/financial-aid progress and provide career-planning tools for counselors and students. "This is a free program for all schools, for all students," the presentation emphasized, and district staff said they hope to have the portal live for the class entering next fall.
Following the presentation and brief technical questions — board members asked whether the system integrates with the Common App and how it handles coursework from other schools — a motion to approve the MOU was made and passed. District staff said CCGI will be integrated with Aeries to minimize extra work for teachers and that counselors will be the primary users responsible for in-classroom implementation supports.
In addition to the CCGI MOU, the board approved the following business items: the warrants for the period listed in the packet; acceptance of grants and donations including a $20,000 Chevron grant for Carpinteria Middle School’s fishing program and several booster and foundation gifts; Measure U items including a Move Green proposal for the Canalino Elementary Learning Center and a change order for the Catalina Learning Center; a coastal-development permit deposit for the Aliso TK building; and the district’s 2023–24 annual audit, which included three program findings. The board also approved personnel recommendations and adopted the 2025 board calendar.
Votes at a glance: the MOU with CCGI was moved and seconded on the floor and approved; the 2023–24 audit was reviewed by auditors and approved by the board; Measure U items on the agenda (proposal, change order and deposit) were approved as presented.
Next steps: counselors and IT staff will coordinate the technical integration and training for the CCGI portal; facilities staff will follow up on Measure U implementation items and the business office will monitor the county’s review of the CEA waiver referenced in the audit discussion.
