Students present Planet Protectors, ClubKind and family-school songs to Carpinteria board

Students from Canalino and Carpinteria Family School presented programs to the board on Sept. 24, highlighting environmental stewardship and youth-led kindness initiatives.
Principal Luis Quintero introduced Planet Protectors (protectores del planeta), a kindergarten–first-grade program that gives young students leadership opportunities to pick up trash twice weekly, conduct trash surveys, and begin recycling education. Young participants—introduced by name during the meeting, including Landon Christopher Hargett, Emily and William—told the board they pick up wrappers and plastic on the blacktop to help the ocean and keep campus clean.
Counselor Tricia Humbles described ClubKind, a leadership program for 2nd and 3rd graders. Students sign a participation contract, wear ClubKind shirts on meeting days, and complete acts of kindness such as food drives, making hygiene packs for a local homeless resource and writing encouraging messages on a chalk walk. Student Safina Guerrero said she joined “because I wanted to help people.”
Carpinteria Family School students also performed a school song on ukulele. Parents and public commenters praised the programs; parent Robin Beaudoin clarified a superintendent enrollment figure for Carpinteria Family School, noting K1 students had been placed at Catalina and therefore did not appear in the family-school enrollment count for that site.
Board members commended the students and staff and thanked them for the presentations.
