Board amends warrant period, approves $251,690.99 in warrants; public raises questions about recent legal fees

At the Aug. 27 meeting, Carpinteria Unified staff identified typographical errors in the printed warrants agenda. The board moved to amend G1 to show the correct warrants period of Aug. 9, 2024 through Aug. 22, 2024 and an amount of $251,690.99. After a motion and second, the amendment and the warrants were approved.
During public comment on the amended warrants, an employee union representative asked whether expenditures for the superintendent’s outside counsel would be visible in the amended report and said the superintendent’s law firm “earned another $63,000 in fees” in early August. The union speaker urged transparency around repeated legal spending and framed the expenditures as diverting taxpayer dollars from classroom needs, including class-size reduction and restored kitchens.
District staff clarified that the online published warrants attachment was correct and that the error only appeared on the printed handout distributed at the meeting. Trustees approved the amended warrants and asked staff to confirm attachments and the public record were correct.
The board approved the amended warrants by voice/roll call and moved on to other business.
