District reports strong summer-program enrollment and improved AP, math results

Laguna Beach Unified presented results from its 2024 summer programs on Aug. 15, telling the board the district recorded 809 enrollments across six summer offerings and expanded course options and peer-mentor opportunities.
Instructional services leaders said the Summer Academy, LEAD program and other offerings served a mix of students in academic intervention and enrichment, with 105 courses offered and 25 district teachers teaching — a 39% increase in teacher-led course sections. The district also said it had 21 high-school students serve as trained math peer mentors and that the Summer Academy’s data-driven approach yielded measurable growth.
The district reported an 88% AP exam passage rate and said about 70% of students who took AP exams scored a 4 or 5. Officials noted a substantial increase in high-school mathematics achievement — described as more than 15% growth in one year — and said the district is using diagnostic and formative assessments (I-Ready, DIBELS) to target instruction.
Board members praised the programs and asked how the district measures outcomes; presenters said they use pre/post assessments aligned to standards and I-Ready diagnostics, and that teachers make recommendations for student placement in summer interventions.
No board action was required; staff said they would continue to monitor outcomes and refine program design for future summers.
