The Laguna Beach Unified School District held its regular business meeting on Aug. 15, 2024, adopted the agenda and then moved into closed session to discuss labor negotiations and possible litigation.
An unidentified speaker called the meeting to order and requested roll call. Clerk Osborne was called; Member Kelly, Member Malcheski, Member Perry and President Vickers were each recorded as present.
"I'd like a motion to adopt our agenda, please," the unidentified speaker said. A motion to adopt the agenda was made, seconded and approved with all members voting in favor; the result was recorded as "Carries 5.0." No changes or additions to the agenda were offered.
The meeting proceeded with an announcement of two closed-session items. The unidentified speaker said the board would discuss a conference of labor negotiators, citing Government Code 54957.6, and anticipated litigation described as "significant exposure to litigation" under paragraph 2 or 3 of subdivision (d) of Government Code 54956.9.
When asked whether there was public comment on the closed-session items, the unidentified speaker said there was none.
A motion was made to adjourn to closed session, seconded, and approved by a unanimous vote recorded as "Carries 5.0." The board then adjourned into closed session.
No votes on substantive district policy or contracts were taken in open session during the portion of the meeting recorded in the transcript. The closed session items are matters exempt from public disclosure by statute while deliberations are ongoing.
