The Chelsea City Council moved multiple police‑related items into committee and recorded a vote supporting a federal JAG grant application.
Councilor Taylor introduced an order that would approve cost items in the collective bargaining agreement negotiated with the New England Police Benevolent Association Local 93 for patrol officers (contract period July 1, 2024–June 30, 2027). Councilor Taylor then moved that the matter be referred to the Ways & Means Committee; there were no objections and the item was sent for fiscal review.
A separate order requested authorization to transfer $330,000 from the FY2025 salary reserve account to the FY2025 regular salaries account to fund wage increases under the contract; that transfer order also was moved to Ways & Means for detailed budget analysis.
Separately, the council unanimously (roll call recorded: 9 yes, 0 no, 2 absent) adopted a resolution endorsing the city’s application to the U.S. Department of Justice for an Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) in the amount of $27,225 to support special law‑enforcement initiatives.
Next steps: Ways & Means will review the contract cost items and the proposed $330,000 transfer to determine fiscal impact and identify funding sources before the council considers final approval. The JAG application will proceed as endorsed by the council at the meeting.
