Residents Stacy Smith (62 Grove St) and Joan Cromwell (38 Addison St) spoke at the hearing, describing the renaming as a “rebirth” for the neighborhood and a return to a historically significant name. Smith thanked the council for considering the proposal and said the change could spur future revitalization; Cromwell, who said she grew up on Walnut Street and has family ties to the area, called the council’s involvement “what community is all about.”
Council members took the matter out of order on the agenda, held public comment and then conducted a roll‑call vote to adopt the order formally renaming the Arlington Street Extension. The clerk recorded 10 members in favor, 0 opposed and 1 absent; the order was adopted.
Councilor Recupero—who introduced the request and led outreach with residents—thanked community members for their advocacy and noted the council heard public input at a dedicated meeting and again at the hearing before voting. The council president thanked the Chelsea Black community for bringing forward neighborhood history and cultural context.
Next steps: the city clerk’s office will implement the ordinance change in the official street-name records; the council did not record any additional conditions or follow-up tasks at the meeting.
