Excel Academy urges flashing beacon and school-zone signs; commission backs pursuing grant-funded beacon

Members of Excel Academy Chelsea urged the commission to install permanent school-zone signage and a rapid-flashing pedestrian beacon on Second Street near the school after staff described dangerous conditions at a nearby crosswalk.
Stephanie Gregg, dean of operations at Excel Academy, described repeated near-misses and two staff injuries at a crosswalk near the Hampton Inn and Mystic Mall Plaza. She told the commission that one staff member, Luis Ortiz, was hit in the crosswalk and required emergency care and a concussion. "He had a concussion that required him to miss a substantial number of days," Gregg said, urging permanent measures that would permit an official crossing guard and reduce risk.
Emily Granoff of Housing and Community Development told the commission that staff had included a rapid-flashing beacon at the location in a recent grant application and recommended proceeding with signs and the beacon whether or not the grant is awarded. Commissioners voted to pursue funding and install school-zone signage and flashing beacons at the identified crosswalks, and moved the item forward for implementation steps.
