Los Alamitos to ask USPS about ZIP-code reassignment affecting a small cluster of homes

The Los Alamitos City Council on Dec. 16 authorized staff to submit findings to the U.S. Postal Service examining whether a small group of Los Alamitos parcels currently carrying Long Beach ZIP codes can be reassigned to Los Alamitos ZIPs.
Management analyst Matthew Leiter told the council that the parcels of concern sit north of Coyote Creek and include the Claremore Lane townhouse community (about 38 homes) and two Long Beach-side streets with roughly 35 single-family homes. Leiter said the parcels fall on the Long Beach side of the creek but are partly within Los Alamitos’ jurisdiction.
Leiter told the council, “The USPS did tell us that they have sole authority over ZIP-code assignment,” and explained that USPS bases ZIPs on proximity to post offices, not municipal boundaries. He also reported that Los Alamitos’ 90720 four-digit extension used for sorting is near capacity, a constraint that could affect reassignment options.
Council members raised concerns about practical effects on residents, including mail delivery problems and taxation jurisdiction. Under council direction, staff will prepare and submit the parcel mapping and supporting information to the USPS and return to the council with the agency’s decision or denial.
Next steps: staff will submit the findings to the U.S. Postal Service and report back with the USPS response; no final ZIP changes were made at the Dec. 16 meeting.
