Los Alamitos council certifies Nov. 5 election, elects Hasselbrink mayor and installs three newly sworn councilmembers

The Los Alamitos City Council voted Dec. 16 to adopt Resolution 20,248 certifying the Nov. 5, 2024 municipal election results and administered the oath of office to the newly elected councilmembers. The Orange County Registrar of Voters certified the election on Dec. 3, and the clerk announced wins for Tanya Dobie (District 1), Mary Lowe (District 2) and Jordan Na Fulda (District 3), and the passage of Measure X (Los Alamitos City Government Accountability Transparency Charter Reform Measure).
At the meeting’s special order, council moved to adopt Resolution 20,248 to formally certify the results. After the clerk called the roll, the motion passed and the council then administered the oath of office to the three winners, who elected to take their oaths together and then posed for a council photo.
Following the oath, the council reorganized its leadership as required by the city charter. Nominations were opened for mayor; the council then held a roll-call vote that resulted in Shelly Hasselbrink’s election as mayor with all members voting aye. The council later elected Councilmember Dobie to serve as mayor pro tem by roll-call vote; that motion also carried unanimously.
Council also reviewed and approved the slate of appointments to outside agencies—such as the Association of California Cities and the Orange County Fire Authority—leaving no changes from the prior year. The meeting record shows routine procedural votes on the consent calendar and warrants were handled the same night.
Outgoing Mayor Nafolda used his final remarks to thank city staff, the police department and residents for the opportunity to serve. He said it was “an honor, to represent the city in my capacity as mayor,” and that he looks forward to serving again on the council.
Next steps: the council’s newly elected members will assume their seats immediately and the appointments to outside agencies will continue as listed; no further action on the election certification was scheduled.
