Representatives of Rising Sun charter school presented academic outcomes and fiscal measures during a public hearing at the Buckeye Union School District board meeting on Dec. 8. The charter’s presenter said Rising Sun has operated since about 2014 and currently serves roughly 157 students. He reported that 72% of students exceeded standards in English language arts and 61% exceeded in math, and that year-over-year growth on Renaissance Star norms showed reading gains averaging 10.8 percentile points and math gains of 7.1 points for grades 3–8.
On fiscal matters, the presenter said Rising Sun submitted its first interim budget and recent audit and was projecting a 3–4% operating surplus for the year and approximately 130 days of cash on hand. He told the board Rising Sun has produced 11 consecutive years of external audits with no material findings and characterized the school’s governance team as experienced.
District staff said the formal staff report on Rising Sun’s reauthorization petition will be posted to the district website by Dec. 30 and included in the board packet for the Jan. 15 meeting. The public hearing closed after members of the public spoke in support of the charter; no board action occurred at the Dec. 8 meeting on the charter petition.
