Baker County approves repairs and a package of budgeted equipment purchases

Baker County commissioners on Oct. 15 approved a package of vehicle repairs and budgeted equipment purchases including an awarded repair for Rescue 50, purchases for solid-waste and parks equipment, and approval to test track-loader attachments before final purchase.

Fire Chief Nelson presented three bids to repair Rescue 50's fuel system and explained warranty differences. He said Duval Ford quoted $17,606.47 with a two-year warranty and unlimited mileage; Allstate quoted $12,945.35 with a three-month labor warranty and two years on parts; Miracles quoted $16,860 with one year/12,000 miles. After discussion of likely future use as a backup vehicle, the board moved to accept Allstate Auto and Truck Repair's quote and approved the expenditure from budgeted funds. "So I think we'll be better off to keep the $4,000 in our pocket," one commissioner said during deliberations.

Public works staff reported a $5,352 savings on a roll-off mechanic's truck by selecting a different transmission option to shorten delivery time; the board approved the revised purchase. The board also approved purchase of a complete compactor unit for the Olustee site and accepted a Toro Reel Master mower for the new Knapp Sports Complex (to be used at that facility and secured), and approved a Load Runner maintenance trailer under state contract for $13,095.

For larger equipment such as a track loader and skid steer, staff said they plan to lease demo units from Caterpillar to test both a 24-inch and 36-inch attachment in the field and return with a recommendation; the board approved the compact track loader item pending that testing plan.

All motions were approved by voice vote during the meeting.
