FEMA opens Disaster Recovery Center in Sanderson; Helene application deadline extended to Nov. 12

A FEMA representative addressed the Baker County Board of County Commissioners on Oct. 15 to give disaster assistance information following recent storms.
LaSharda, representing FEMA, said a Disaster Recovery Center is operating at 15902 US 90 in Sanderson and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Oct. 19. She also said the application window for assistance from Hurricane Helene has been extended to Nov. 12. "The deadline has been extended for, for Helene. I want it's been pushed to November 12th," she told the commission.
LaSharda urged residents to file insurance claims first, to keep receipts, to submit separate FEMA applications if they experienced damage from separate disasters, and to follow requests for simple verifications such as proof of occupancy or ID. She also described a FEMA rumor-response webpage to counter misinformation and provided the FEMA helpline number (1-800-621-3362) for residents who need help applying.
The board thanked the FEMA representative and staff. Commissioners were told they can refer residents to the Disaster Recovery Center or the FEMA hotline and to coordinate local outreach efforts with county emergency management staff.
