GCRA outlines Cornerstone, downtown 'streetery' and reallocated funds as commission weighs priorities

The city and county agreed earlier to reallocate approximately $12.2 million to downtown initiatives; after recent commitments to the Block by Block ambassador program (a three‑year contract totaling roughly $3.1 million), Safe Streets for All match funding, and other downtown commitments, approximately $6.1 million remains in the downtown reserve, Smith said.
Smith also summarized a proposed permanent closure and redesign known as the "streetery" between South Main and Southwest Second Streets. City public engagement begins with an open house and the GCRA‑advisory board will review design recommendations in January; formal commission action is expected in February.
Commissioners asked specific questions about funding sources, additional grant pursuit for the 8th/Waldo corridor, project timelines and opportunities to coordinate county resources and city planning. Commissioner discussion emphasized leveraging partnerships for grocery/food‑access initiatives in East Gainesville, exploring increased development intensity at Cornerstone for mixed‑use health and retail services, and pursuing trails funding for the Newberry‑to‑High Springs corridor.
