Leon County accepts Hurricane Helene after-action report, expects full federal reimbursement

Leon County commissioners on Dec. 10 accepted an after-action report on the county’s response to Hurricane Helene, hearing staff recommendations to shore up emergency operations and noting anticipated federal reimbursement for county expenses.
County staff summarized preparations, response and recovery activities and recommended options to improve resilience. The county administrator said the county incurred "roughly $1,300,000" in costs from Helene and that the county anticipates "100% federal reimbursement." Emergency management staff reviewed lessons learned and proposed operational changes to improve coordination and communications in future storms.
Commissioners praised emergency management staff for coordination with partners including Leon County Schools, the National Weather Service and the Red Cross. Commissioner Cummings asked about long-term strategies to reduce future power outages, including whether utilities are seeking grants to move overhead lines underground; staff said utilities are the eligible applicants for those grant programs and county-city partnerships on vulnerability assessments continue.
The board moved, discussed briefly and approved staff recommendations unanimously.
