Leon County approves extension of state grant to finish septic-to-sewer conversions

The Leon County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously Dec. 10 to accept a state Department of Environmental Protection grant amendment that extends the term to allow two additional septic-to-sewer conversions.
County staff said the pilot has been "very successful" and that "we've got 77 or 78 systems already completed," with additional funds available to convert two more systems. The amendment extends the term so the county does not return unused funds to the state and allows those two additional conversions to proceed once final permits are issued.
Commissioner Proctor asked how staff will ensure the program reaches its target of assisting 80 homeowners and whether more outreach or staffing is required. County staff told commissioners that the two remaining conversions are in permitting and the contractor is ready to proceed "as soon as we get permits." The board made and seconded the motion for the extension and approved it unanimously.
The county described the item as an extension to complete additional conversions from septic to sewer rather than a new funding request. County staff framed the decision as a way to avoid forfeiting state funds while continuing to complete pending conversions.
