The Brevard County Commission on Dec. 3 approved a request from Supervisor of Elections Tim Bobanek to carry forward unspent prior‑year funds to purchase half of the county’s needed voting machines this fiscal year and to budget for the rest next year.
Bobanek said savings from a single‑party presidential preference primary freed funds that were earmarked to purchase new machines, noting that 11‑year‑old equipment is incompatible with current software and the county is using loaner machines with newer models for early voting. Commissioners asked whether the new machines were a necessity or a convenience; Bobanek and staff said the purchase was necessary to ensure secure and compatible voting operations.
Commissioner Delaney thanked the canvassing board and staff for their work on election administration. The motion to approve the carry‑forward funding passed by roll call.
