Commissioners approve executive session on firefighters’ collective bargaining after 4–1 vote

Brevard County commissioners voted 4–1 on Dec. 12 to schedule a closed executive session with the county manager and appropriate staff to discuss ongoing collective bargaining negotiations with the International Association of Fire Fighters (Local 2969).
Commissioner Atkinson explained the request, saying the topic is permitted by Florida statute and that previous boards had used executive sessions for the contract. “The executive session related to collective bargaining negotiations are permitted by Florida statute,” Atkinson said, noting the prior board had an executive session on the same negotiations earlier in the year.
The board voted to place the session at the end of the regular board meeting scheduled for Dec. 17, 2024. The motion passed 4–1 on roll call; Vice Chair Goodson voted no. The county manager and county attorney indicated staff will prepare for the session and follow any statutory notice and recordkeeping requirements.
Public commenters at the meeting urged the board to consider revenue and operational options to address fire/EMS staffing, including impact‑fee adjustments, improved billing collections and an EMS assessment. County staff said a fire assessment report will be presented to the board next week.
