Commission renames barrier island sanctuary to honor local conservationist 'Doc Earhart'

The Brevard County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution on Dec. 3 renaming the south barrier island sanctuary in honor of Doc Earhart, a local naturalist and UCF marine biology professor credited with early sea turtle nesting surveys and championing conservation of the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge.
Commissioner Atkinson sponsored the request and described Doc Earhart’s 30‑year career mentoring students, partnering with legislators and advancing the refuge that includes over 20 miles of critical nesting shoreline between Melbourne Beach and La Bossa Beach. Several speakers with long experience in sea turtle volunteer programs told the board they supported the renaming and offered to help organize a public unveiling.
The resolution recognized Julianne Datoli and Niko Vargas (youth skaters) in a separate consent item earlier in the meeting; the sanctuary renaming vote followed public comment and a brief exchange among commissioners. The board asked staff to coordinate a public event for the sign unveiling.
