Alfredo “Gus” Pérez sworn in as Laredo ISD trustee for District 4

Alfredo “Gus” Pérez was sworn in Thursday as the Laredo Independent School District trustee representing District 4, a board ceremony that included an invocation, the national anthem and brief remarks from family and colleagues.

The board announced the item to administer the oath of office and approved it by voice vote after a motion to proceed was made and seconded. The oath was administered by Webb County Justice of the Peace Juan Paz; Pérez recited the pledge to uphold the U.S. and Texas constitutions and state laws.

The ceremony featured an introduction by Loretta Cisneros, assistant principal at Sigueroa High School, who noted Pérez’s 36 years with Laredo ISD as a teacher, specialty school director and administrator. Linda Jo Perez introduced her husband with a longer recounting of his career highlights, including launching the district’s STEM program at Sigueroa High School, helping establish the Cambridge program that lets juniors and seniors earn college credit, and other professional-development initiatives.

Pérez thanked supporters and family, cited examples of former students who went on to advanced study and technical careers, and said his platform is to push student achievement "up and to the right," emphasizing support for teachers, faculty and staff. He told the audience he will strive for "excellence" and to ensure students have opportunities to compete nationally and globally.

Elections officer Jorge Gutierrez completed post-oath formalities, asking Pérez to sign the statement of elected officer. The ceremony concluded and the meeting was adjourned after an attendee moved to adjourn and the chair declared the meeting closed.

By voice vote, the board approved administering the oath; the transcript records only vocal "aye" responses and does not include a roll-call tally.
