LAREDO, Texas ' The Laredo Independent School District Board of Trustees on Nov. 14 adopted a resolution directing the district's 314 votes on the Webb County Appraisal District ballot to nominee Goyo M. Lopez.
Finance staff explained the mechanics and the limits the district faces: "The board did nominate Goyo M. Lopez to represent Laredo ISD for a seat," staff said, adding that the district is entitled to cast 314 votes but that 850 votes are required to secure a seat. The board discussed outreach to other taxing units that have excess votes and asked trustees to place calls to solicit those excess votes before the December deadline.
The resolution cites Section 6.0301 of the Property Tax Code as the authority for taxing units to nominate candidates and cast votes and directs staff to deliver a copy of the resolution to the Webb County chief appraiser before Dec. 15, 2024. Trustees voted in favor of the resolution by voice vote.
Board members said they will continue to contact Webb County and other taxing entities to determine whether excess votes can be placed on Lopez's line on the ballot. District staff noted that some entities could only secure one seat with their excess votes and that coordination among entities will determine final results.
