Trustees and staff described two competing priorities. Supporters said clear bags could help security screens and make visible items such as vape pens; opponents called the proposal discriminatory against women and an unnecessary erosion of personal privacy and dignity. Trustee Ricardo Garza objected to what he called an intrusion on personal apparel and fashion, and one trustee warned the measure could be perceived as discriminatory because women commonly carry medical supplies and personal items. A trustee urged administration to survey employees and other stakeholders before returning a recommendation.
Superintendent Dr. Sylvia Rios noted that current district policy already requires metal‑detector screening and permits security to search bags when an alarm is triggered. She said the administration proposed tabling to gather more stakeholder input and study alternatives. The motion to table carried by voice vote with one recorded no vote.
Next steps: trustees directed administration to consult stakeholders and return the item to a future board meeting with survey results or recommended alternatives.
