Trustees approved the Optional Flexible School Day Program (OFSDP) application for Valdez Nontraditional High School for the 2024–25 school year after a presentation by Eduardo Contreras, the district’s at‑risk/attendance coordinator.
Contreras told the board the OFSDP is required annually for participating districts and aims to improve graduation rates for students who are behind in credits, at risk of dropping out or who have already left school. He reported this year Valdez had 92 enrolled students, 71 graduated via the program, and the students completed 9,888 community‑service hours; he said 200 spots are available for students from Martin, Nixon, Sigueroa and Lara Academy.
Trustees asked whether students must leave their home campus to participate (Contreras confirmed they generally register at Valdez) and whether the program could allow late‑arrival schedules; Contreras said the optional flexible day helps students who work or have other obligations and that daily instructional minutes must be recorded (a minimum of 45 minutes per day). Trustees pushed for earlier identification of eligible students so referrals do not arrive late in the year.
After discussion, the board approved the OFSDP application by voice vote. The at‑risk coordinator will monitor enrollment and credit completion and report outcomes as the program operates.
