Laredo ISD honors veteran Ray Sanchez and recognizes student achievements

The Laredo ISD Board of Trustees opened its June 20 meeting by recognizing U.S. Army National Guard veteran Ray Sanchez and presenting district awards to students and staff.
Ray Sanchez, who said he enlisted after graduating high school in 2009 and served in Baghdad from 2009 to 2010, told the board, “I wanted to to get out and, serve my country.” The board presented Sanchez with a token of appreciation and invited him to lead the pledge of allegiance. Board members thanked Sanchez and his family and noted his nonprofit, Smiles From Heaven, which Sanchez said began in 2019 after the death of his daughter and which he described as providing support to local families.
Trustees also recognized district achievements and partners. The finance department received a certificate of achievement for fiscal year 2023; Officer Victor Gomez and K9 Tara were honored for winning first place in a narcotics K9 competition; and dozens of students were recognized for reading, English-learner, UIL and other accomplishments. Superintendent Rios previewed a TASB Summer Leadership Institute video highlighting the board’s session there.
The board’s recognitions were followed by routine business and a public-comment period. The meeting concluded after the board handled several agenda items and elected to adjourn.
The board did not take action related to the recognitions beyond the presentations and expressions of thanks. The district said photographic and video materials from the recognitions will be posted on LISD’s official Facebook page.
