Board to post HR director role immediately; commissioners debate title and structure
Summary

Klamath County commissioners voted to post an immediate recruitment for the county’s HR director on Dec. 10, following conversations about the role’s future structure and responsibilities.
The presiding commissioner said the county needs to move quickly because the current HR director will depart soon and the county operates "very, very lean" in HR. The board discussed whether to retain the director classification or to reframe the role to attract different candidates. "If we were to talk about the job more in terms of an operations lead or a talent strategist ... using more forward thinking titles can help attract some more forward thinking talent," one commissioner said.
Several commissioners emphasized the importance of a strong HR leader for a 100‑employee county and argued the position should remain a director role to avoid legal and labor risks. One commissioner recommended county council review applications and conduct initial interviews to help identify finalists for the board.
The board did not adopt a permanent restructuring but agreed to post the position immediately and to involve county council and other leaders in screening applicants.
Next steps: staff will post the HR director vacancy, include broad outreach channels (including LinkedIn), and work with county council to review candidates and provide preliminary recommendations to the board.
