Upper Pottsgrove veterans memorial to feature inscriptions by 8th‑grade students

Dennis Elliott, a Vietnam‑era Navy veteran, told the Pottsgrove School District board that community volunteers and students have collaborated on a new Upper Pottsgrove Township Veterans Memorial.
Elliott said the memorial effort began seven years ago with former commissioner Herb Miller and has been supported by local partners including Hopewell Community Church and State Street Bingo. He read a draft center‑stone inscription that, he said, combined phrases submitted by then‑8th‑grade honors ELA students so that student voices would be permanently represented.
Helen Walt, representing state Rep. Donna Schurin, read the lawmaker’s remarks and presented certificates to the participating students. Walt said the inscriptions and the students’ work would “forever pay tribute to the brave veterans” and thanked Dennis Elliott for sustaining the effort.
Superintendent Dr. Finnerty and board members thanked Elliott and the students; Dr. Finnerty said the district would coordinate with organizers and asked to be notified when the stone is ready. Elliott said the stone was being cut and the group hopes to have the memorial completed by Memorial Day 2025.
The board gave the presenters a round of applause and recorded the recognition during the district’s public meeting. No formal board action was required or taken on the memorial during the session.
