Student-led Relay For Life raises $32,000 districtwide; Springfield’s team raised $6,000

Members of the Springfield Township High School community told the board on Dec. 3 that the student-led Wissahickon Valley Relay For Life reached a district fundraising goal of $32,000 this year.
Audrey Walsh, the Relay adviser, said she has been the adviser for seven years and that the club — about 20 to 25 students who meet biweekly — helped lead the event. "This year the Relay For Life for Wissahickon Valley reached their goal of $32,000," Walsh said. She added that Springfield’s student-run team raised $4,000 during the four-hour event and that the school cut an additional $2,000 check to Relay For Life, for a total of $6,000 from the school on that day; Walsh noted there were also online donations for which the total was not specified in the meeting record.
Student captain Ella Walsh told the board the experience has helped her develop leadership and event-planning skills: "Relay For Life and the club itself has just been really meaningful and important to me personally, and I just have learned a lot with leadership skills and how to plan." The board and superintendent acknowledged the students and adviser for their work; the American Cancer Society was named as an event partner though its representative, Jamie Cohen, was unable to attend.
Board members described the student leadership and fundraising as a positive community achievement and thanked the students and staff for bringing the event to Springfield.
