At the Wyoming Area School Board's Dec. 17 meeting, members of the public urged the district to do more to include students with disabilities in athletics and to consider unified-sports programs.
A commenter from Exeter described seeing a disabled cheerleader participating alongside teammates and urged the district to "get rid of the barriers" that prevent children with disabilities from participating in sports. The commenter cited neighboring districts participating in unified sports and said: "Let's all realize with any type of disability can learn sports ... If you have the right coaching, understanding with leadership, and inclusion, then having a special needs child or children on any type of sports program is a great thing."
Parent Vanessa Smith asked whether the electronic-device pouches discussed in the policy report had been purchased and how long it would take to receive them if the policy is approved; the presenter replied that vendor implementation is multi-week and that purchase would follow policy approval. Smith said she understood both sides — concerns about phone access in emergencies and the need for stronger enforcement — and urged the board to balance safety and inclusion.
The public comments highlighted calls for the district to explore unified-sports participation or adopt a no-cut policy to broaden athletic access for students with disabilities; board members did not take an immediate action in response during the same meeting.
