York County commissioners postpone vehicle purchase after accessibility and utility concerns

York County commissioners voted to postpone a decision on purchasing an additional county vehicle after several members said the model under consideration would not meet the county’s practical needs.

During the meeting commissioners questioned whether the Chevrolet Equinox-style vehicles previously discussed would provide adequate space and utility for staff and commissioners. One commissioner said the Equinox “just isn’t going to happen” for some users and suggested a larger SUV or a pickup to carry people and equipment more comfortably. Another commissioner recommended gathering quotes for an Explorer, Suburban and half-ton pickups, including state-bid pricing and basic equipment add-ons such as a cap or cover.

Several commissioners proposed an interim step before buying a second vehicle: document actual vehicle usage and pilot a centralized scheduling system so the county can see how often a second vehicle is truly needed. “Maybe we do a pilot management of the vehicle that we do have, just doing some more documentation of when there is overlap,” a board member said during the discussion.

After that exchange a motion to postpone the purchase until staff returned with price quotes and usage data carried on a roll call vote.

Next steps: commissioners asked staff (the county clerk and relevant department contacts) to collect state-bid and dealer quotes for larger SUVs and pickups, supply mileage and usage logs for current county vehicles, and report back with a recommendation at a future meeting. No formal procurement or purchase authorization was made at this meeting.
