Milton council unanimously approves Crabapple code change to encourage structured parking

The Milton City Council on Jan. 22 voted to approve a text amendment to the Crabapple form‑based code that reduces the number of criteria required to earn additional building units tied to structured parking.
Robin McDonald, the city’s zoning manager, described the amendment (RZ2404) as a housekeeping change to correct language adopted in the Unified Development Code and said staff recommends that only one criterion be required so developers have more incentive to build structured parking. McDonald said the Planning Commission unanimously recommended the amendment on Dec. 19.
McDonald summarized the effect: the number of allowable building units on a site may increase by two units for every structured parking space that meets one of the qualifying criteria. There was no public comment on the item during tonight’s meeting, and council voted to approve agenda item 25‑013.
The change alters the incentive structure for development in the Crabapple district by making it somewhat easier for projects to qualify for increased density where structured parking is provided. The ordinance amendment will be incorporated into the city’s UDC as described by staff.
