La Porte honors two bystanders after toddler revived with CPR

The La Porte City Council recognized two residents for lifesaving actions during the meeting on Oct. 28.
Council presented awards to Pedro Ortega and Arturo Vasquez for their roles in rescuing a small child who had been found unresponsive in the water on Sept. 12, 2024. Staff recounted that Ortega discovered the child and removed him from the water, and Vasquez, guided by La Porte PD dispatch, began chest compressions until emergency responders arrived. La Porte Fire, EMS and life‑flight transported the toddler to Hermann Hospital, from which he was discharged within a week with no lasting effects, staff said.
Council praised the men’s ‘‘selfless actions’’ and thanked them for saving the child. The recognition included an acknowledgement from local EMS, fire and police representatives.
